EMERGENCY LIGHTING SYSTEM FUNCTION
John Peterson patented The Emergent Lighting System (ELS) and founded Emergent Lighting Systems in 2007. The ELS is cutting-edge system that is designed to be an emergency egress and mass notification system to be activated in various emergency situations.
In the event of a smoke/fire alert, the pathway will be illuminated with dynamic emergency lighting that will direct an individual toward the nearest exit. This is done with a set of green LED lights that flash or strobe, to the nearest exit point. Traditional emergency egress lighting is static and mounted on the ceiling; however, that style lighting will become obscured by smoke as the fire increases. By installing the egress lighting on the floor, an individual can follow along the path made by the strobe effect of the green LEDs to the nearest exit.
Recent business and school shootings have shown the deficiency of traditional notification systems capability to immediately transmit warnings to entire school campuses and facilities. The ELS fills this void by utilizing dynamic lights to provide safe egress and static lights for immediate mass notification. The system incorporates the use of static red, blue, amber/yellow, and white LEDs in addition to the green egress LEDs. Each of these can be illuminated to indicate a different emergency situation, such as an intruder alert. The system also provides emergency lighting in the event of a loss of building power. Each facility may set up specially programmed alerts specific to their organization’s needs using the color coded lights.
In the event of an intruder alert, designated individuals would be able to set a silent emergency notification. The individual would press a “panic button” which would activate the appropriate color LED in the base in every room in the facility instantly alerting every occupant in the building that there is a problem so that they are able to quickly and quietly take action. The staff could be issued a small pendant to wear that would immediately activate the system. The activation units can also be mounted in public areas in order to allow any individual who recognizes a threat to instantly relay that threat potential to the entire facility or campus which could include multiple buildings. As soon as the system is activated every installed unit turns on. An entire college campus or facility would know if a threat exists in seconds not minutes. A control in a central location would indicate which area had a problem, allowing authorities to go to that location quickly and quietly. With this discrete notification system, occupants would be able to take action without alerting or agitating an intruder. This would also allow authorities to know which locations could be evacuated without alerting the location in distress.
